This is an issue that we struggle with at Class Advocate. We attempt to aggregate pending class action lawsuits and investigations into one database. We define “class action” as a “common set of facts capable of harming many.” Interestingly to us, many plaintiff firms at times do the exact opposite: file then attempt to run as silent as possible for as long as possible to avoid competition. So it is definitely a mixed bag.

One reason for such press releases is to generate contacts from additional witnesses to the alleged wrongdoing. They can also serve to prompt contacts from putative class members, who (depending on the type of case) often have relevant information and/or may eventually join a case as a class representative, should one of the original representatives withdraw or become disqualified for any reason.
